C. 1830 made by Abiel Chandler, Concord NH. Abiel Chandler was born in 1807 and died in 1881. He was a successful clockmaker and was in partnership with his father Timothy. Shortly after 1829 Abiel Chandler went to Boston and trained in the Willard shop to make Willard Timepiece (Banjo Clock). We are pleased to offer a rare example of a New Hampshire mirror clock by Abiel Chandler that is both signed and labeled. In addition, the works are the famous “rat trap” design. In 1954 Donald K. Packard, first President of the Boston Clock Club published the first article on this famous movement in the NAWCC Bulletin of April Whole number 53 under the title “Das Rattenfallen-Uhrwerke.” There is a section in Parsons “New Hampshire Clock & Clockmakers” that covers these clocks. Scans of pages 230 – 231 are including in this listing that document a related example. This clock has the additional unique feature of being both signed and labeled. The dial is untouched and original with a fabulous signature. The label is original as well. The reverse glass painted tablet has been restored from behind on the original glass. The mirror and pine backing are original. The case is in good condition, and note the dove tailed bottom board that is still in tact. This type of movement is something that you love to see as a collector but realize the temperamental nature of its functionality.

<a
