Joshua Wilder\u00a0was a\u00a0prolific clockmaker at work in\u00a0the South Shore during the Federal Period.\u00a0\u00a0 Over the years\u00a0we\u00a0have owned shelf, banjo, tall case, and dwarf clocks made by him.\u00a0\u00a0 This particular example is a clock that we reacquired and represents one of the finest examples of his work.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Wilder\u00a0was born in 1786 and died in 1860.\u00a0\u00a0 He was apprenticed to John Bailey and ultimately became\u00a0one of the leaders of famous group of Quaker Clockmakers from this region.\u00a0 Joining Wilder in this remarkable clock was Abiel White\u00a0a cabinetmaker from Weymouth who had previously worked with Bailey and in addition to clock cases made fine period case furniture.\u00a0\u00a0This case bears his ink inscription within the hood \u201cAbiel White April 2nd 1823 \/ Maker<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. \u00a0 When you study the construction of this particular clock case it becomes readily apparent that Abiel White played a\u00a0prominent role in\u00a0the design and reduction to practice of the legendary Hingham – Hanover area “Dwarf Tall Case” clocks.\u00a0\u00a0 While there are numerous “Abiel White” attributions associated with clock cases this is the only documented example that I have ever seen.<\/p>\n

The clock case is constructed of\u00a0choice flame\u00a0mahogany with a wonderful warm patina. The arched top bonnet\u00a0retains its original\u00a0delicate applied fretwork and chimney blocks that support three\u00a0original brass finials.\u00a0\u00a0 The bonnet is flanked by a pair of turned columns supported by brass capitals.\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0glazed bonnet\u00a0door opens to an American painted iron dial from the Boston school of craftsmen. The dial with geometric spandrel decoration executed in typical Federal colors: mustard yellow and blood red highlighted by raised gilt bead decoration mounts directly to the movement without the use of an intermediate or “false plate.” \u00a0\u00a0 The arched section of the dial is fitted with a rolling moon with moon faces, country scene, and a sailing ship.\u00a0 a painted moon phase disk in the lunette, decorated with hand painted scenes and moon faces.\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0time track of the dial\u00a0has Arabic numerals, and is\u00a0fitted with a calendar disc and seconds register.\u00a0 The dial\u00a0retains a remarkable, untouched original \u00a0signature below the center arbor: \u201cWarranted By J. Wilder \/ Hingham\u201d. The skeletonized plate brass movement is a identifiable regional period detail associated with the\u00a0Southeastern Massachusetts Quaker Clockmakers.\u00a0 The works \u00a0have been professionally serviced and\u00a0 in excellent condition. \u00a0The movement is fitted with an original steel shaft pendulum with a brass capped lead bob and a pair of cast iron weights.\u00a0 The waist section of the case has smooth quarter columns with\u00a0decorated by brass capitals that \u00a0flank a rectangular thumb molded\u00a0door with cross banded accent\u00a0framing the central panel.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0base panel continues the theme of the waist door with\u00a0a\u00a0cross-banded border around\u00a0the central\u00a0figured mahogany panel. The base continues to a shaped apron all resting on straight French fee.\u00a0Overall Dimensions:\u00a0 85 \u00bd\u00a0X\u00a019 \u00bd X 10 inches.<\/p>\n
