Taber, No. 1<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adamsbrown.com\/taber\/26.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4878 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/adamsbrown.com\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/26-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adamsbrown.com\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/26-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adamsbrown.com\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/26-768x573.jpg 768w, https:\/\/adamsbrown.com\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/26-402x300.jpg 402w, https:\/\/adamsbrown.com\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/26.jpg 887w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Elnathan Taber was born in 1768 and died in 1854.\u00a0 He\u00a0served as an apprentice to Simon Willard and inherited the tools and goodwill from Willard after he retired.\u00a0\u00a0 This example\u00a0retains the original makers &#8220;instruction label&#8221; pasted on the back of the waist door.\u00a0\u00a0 The high style &#8220;Roxbury&#8221; case with\u00a0fluted columns in the bonnet fitted with brass stop flutes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The arched top bonnet\u00a0has applied \u00a0fretwork, chimneys and ball and spire finials.\u00a0 The\u00a0sides panels of the hood are fitted with \u00a0tombstone shaped side lites. These\u00a0facilitate \u00a0visual access to the works. The bonnet door\u00a0 opens to a painted iron dial that attaches\u00a0directly to the movement without the use of a &#8220;false&#8221; or intermediate plate.\u00a0\u00a0 While many\u00a0Willard School &#8220;Roxbury&#8221; clocks\u00a0are found\u00a0with imported\u00a0dials from\u00a0Birmingham England, this dial is clearly of local\u00a0Boston origin.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Note the American flag on the sailing ship in the arch.\u00a0 The clock was designed with an automaton function as the ship in the arch bobs back and forth in synchrony with the swing of the pendulum.\u00a0 This is a very rare and desirable feature in an Early American clock.\u00a0 The background scene behind the ship is an arched concave plate that is paint decorated to form a coastal landscape along with a pair of\u00a0sailing ships in the background.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The\u00a0thumb molded waist door with\u00a0quarter fan inlay is flanked by fluted quarter columns with brass stop flutes\u00a0and\u00a0capped by brass capitals.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The base panel with corresponding quarter fan inlay continues to a step molded base with applied bracket feet and\u00a0a shaped apron.\u00a0\u00a0 The case is numbered &#8220;1&#8221; with original scribe marks in both the bonnet and the case.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The clock works are high quality eight day striking brass powered by a pair of original &#8220;tin can&#8221; weight shells filled with sand.\u00a0\u00a0 The pendulum\u00a0is suspended with a wooden shaft in the manner of Simon Willard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Condition: The case has been professionally conserved and refinished. Minor repairs to the original fretwork.\u00a0 The feet are original.\u00a0\u00a0 Losses to the original makers instruction label.\u00a0 Period finials &amp; original weights.\u00a0 Dial has been
