<\/a><\/p>\nRare and Early Queen Anne Philadelphia Tall Case Clock Signed Peter Stretch<\/p>\n
This example is from the first half\u00a0of the 18th Century with eight day count wheel strike train, engraved chapter ring, ring turned winding holes, applied spandrels and matte center ground.\u00a0\u00a0 In between the five minute markers are “fleur de lis” \u00a0half hour indices.\u00a0 The square brass dial with applied silvered seconds register is coupled to an eight day striking brass movement with count wheel strike train.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The winding drums are grooved and the bell mounts to the front plate of the clock works.\u00a0\u00a0 There are compass scribe marks on the front plate corresponding to the layout of the gear train.\u00a0The clock is powered by a pair of original lead filled brass shelled weights.<\/p>\n
The Walnut Delaware Valley case with tomb or “Sarcophagus” stepped top with applied fret and center plinth flanked by a pair of applied fretwork pieces with three turned wooden finials that adorn the top of the bonnet.\u00a0\u00a0 A glazed bonnet door with integral columns opens to the square dial eight day brass movement.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Below the door is a bold cove molding in the waist section of the case.\u00a0 Note the\u00a0mitred corners\u00a0that form the center section of the case and the figured rectangular waist door attached to the case with their original cast brass strap hinges.\u00a0\u00a0 The base section with single board, old growth Walnut continues to a step molding and pad feet.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Walnut is the primary wood with yellow Pine secondaries.\u00a0\u00a0 The monumental case stands at 99 inches tall to the top of the center finial.<\/p>\n
Condition & Conservation: The works have been professionally serviced and the dial has been cleaned and re-silvered.\u00a0 During the conservation of the clock movement we discovered an engraving on the back of the calendar ring which is depicted in one of the photos below. The case has been cleaned and finished in shellac followed by a paste wax top coat.\u00a0 When we acquired the clock a previous owner modified the base panel and added a secret removable compartment to “hide their stash of liquor.” Fortunately the sides and backboard were not altered and remain in original condition.\u00a0 And thanks to the help of an old friend who provided the 18th C Philadelphia Walnut drop leaf table with a single board top…… we were able to accurately restore the base panel with an age appropriate 5\/4 thick, one board piece of dense, old growth Walnut. The “Sarcophagus” top is original along with the two side chimneys.\u00a0 The center chimney, top fret, and three finials are appropriate bench made restorations.\u00a0 Enjoy the photos… there are not many of these left !<\/p>\n
