First quarter 20th C weight driven lyre banjo clock by Elisha Durfee, Providence RI.\u00a0 Durfee lyre clocks are quite scarce and this example is quite nice and has a wonderful presence on the wall.\u00a0 We’ve just completed a full overhaul of the movement, and the clock runs strong and keeps good time. Elisha Chester Durfee was the nephew of Walter Durfee who took of over the business in 1921. This is one of the full size “Curtis” carved Mahogany weight driven lyre clocks that were first introduced by Walter Durfee in 1907 as part of his wall clock series of wall clocks. Two sizes of lyre clocks were offered: 32″ and 42″ versions. The 42 inch version also known as the “box” lyre as it retains a hinged lower door. This example with choice figured Mahogany and wonderful\u00a0carved throat frame. The reverse glass tablets were executed with Patriotic “Eagle” & “Shield” decoration. A locally made eight day weight driven timepiece die stamped “George Taylor, Providence” was used in the fabrication of the clock. The works have just been professionally serviced in our shop. Note the finely made steel hands with delicate barbed tips. A cast eight pound weight powers the works. The untouched original painted dial is signed “Elisha Durfee, Providence.” The cast brass eagle finished in “old gold” with original steel spike adorns the top of the case.<\/span><\/p>\n
