David Wood, Newburyport

Federal Mahogany Tall Case Clock C. 1800 made by David Wood of Newburyport MA.  The arched bonnet with applied fret retained by three reeded chimneys supports three ball and spire brass finials.  The glazed bonnet door flanked by fluted columns captured by cast brass capitals opens to a painted iron dial of English origin from the Wilson foundry in Birmingham.   Behind the dial is an eight day brass striking movement with arched plates.  The waist section with thumb molded rectangular waist door is flanked by fluted columns with brass capitals.   There is satinwood string inlay in the door as well as the base panel.   Supporting the clock are a wonderful set of original French feet.  The clock is powered by a pair of dome-top, sand filled tin can weights and the pendulum rod with flat brass stem is an identifiable period detail associated with David Wood.    All in all a very nice, clean example with an untouched original signature.  The clock stands at 94″ tall to the top of the center finial.
