Isaac Brokaw Bridge Town NJ High Style Inlaid Mahogany Tall Case Clock C. 1810

Isaac Brokaw Bridge Town

Isaac Brokaw Colonial New Jersey Tall Case Clock circa 1790 made in Bridge Town (Rahway).   The case is a wonderful example of the “High Style” of the period executed by local cabinetmakers at work in the Elizabethtown NJ area during the late 18th C.    The graceful, slender proportions of this case include: narrow waist flanked by fluted quarter columns, shaped waist door, graceful scroll moldings terminating in beautifully carved floral rosettes, oval inlay in the panel below the cove molding and in the waist door and base panel continuing to straight French feet with a shaped apron.   The base is completely original.  The height of the case is 97 1/2 inches tall.  The works are text book “Brokaw” with all of the characteristics documented in Bill Drost’s 1966 landmark New Jersey Clocks & Watches Book: arched plates, smooth drums, countwheel strike, “Z” streak of lightning strike lever, bell stand mounts through suspension bridge, etc.   The works are clean with fresh cables and the clock runs and strikes fine after our complete professional restoration.     The dial is original with beautiful spandrel decoration and lunar phases in the arch.
