David J. Magnin New York

David J. Magnin was a dealer, importer, jeweler, watch & clockmaker listed in the early New York City Business Directories at work at 29 Union Square.   Their advertisement in the directory read: “Importers of Watches, Jewelry, Clocks, Bronzes, Etc., 29 Union Square.”   The clock pictured for sale is one of their offerings and most likely an imported clock from England that was retailed in New York.  It was commonplace in the major trading ports along the East Coast to offer imported goods from Europe, and especially in New York where an added tax was levied on locally produced goods.   Early brass dial bracket clocks signed by American craftsmen are quite scarce and this Is a choice example.  The eight day brass fusee movement has trapezoidal shaped plates with a notched cutout at the bottom.   The brass sheet dial is finely engraved with the David Magnin, New York in flowing script in the arched section of the dial.   The clock measures 17 X 10 3/4 X 7 inches overall with a 9 1/2 X 7 inch dial, 6 1/2 inch time track and 5/8″ numerals.   Clock comes with a winding key and keys for the front and back door.
