Burlington Co. New Jersey C. 1800 Cherry Chippendale Tall Case Clock, Conover Family Provenance

Burlington County New Jersey

Circa 1800 Cherry Chippendale tall case clock that descended through the original family from the estate of Clifford H. Conover, Hightstown NJ.  This is a clock that stood in the corner of the living room of Cliff’s home for as long as I can remember.   It has passed down through the Conover family and was part of the estate sale after Cliff passed in 2015.   The clock stands at 94″ tall with bold carved scrolls and floral carved rosettes.   The form of this case closely resembles clocks from the Mount Holly area and in fact there is a clock in Battison & Kane’s “The American Clock 1725 – 1865″ in the Mable Brady Garvan Collection at Yale University on page 65 by Wood & Hudson that helps support the attribution.  There are numerous local chalk inscriptions inside the case including the one by Joseph Johnson of Hightstown.   On the inside of the backboard is the repair script by John Pittman another familiar name you find in early Delaware valley cases.   The case has been refinished and there have been repairs to the scroll tips.  The feet are bench made restorations.  The works are in an excellent state of preservation and the clock runs and strikes fine.    The dial is English and retains its original paint and decoration.    The clock stands 94” tall.
