New Jersey Federal Inlaid Cherry Tall Case Clock C. 1800, the case labelled by John Scudder of Westfield” [MADE] AND SOLD BY/ JOHN SCUDDER/ CABINET-MAKER,/ WESTFIELD, 90 in. high, 18 ¾ in. wide, 9 7/8 in. deep.   The broken arch scroll top bonnet with inlaid rosette terminals and inlaid center plinth with three original turned finials all with a contrasting inlaid circular band around the center.    The glazed door opens to a painted iron dial from the Wilson, Birmingham foundry with floral corner spandrel decoration and a moving moon dial with a country scene, sailing ship, and two moon faces.   Flanking the bonnet are a pair of block and turned stretchers with a delicate inlaid band at the base.   The double pointed waist door with oval inlaid motif flanked by fluted quarter columns.    At the base of the quarter columns are elaborately inlaid “bellflower” motifs continuing to a base panel with oval inlay, stepped molded base all resting on straight bracket feet.

The eight day brass works have been professionally restored and the clock is in perfect running order.    The moon and calendar both index properly as well.    The case has a wonderful surface patina and color.    The feet facings are original with extra support added to the back feet and the original dovetailed bottom board was broken out and partially missing prior to the conservation and a skilled cabinetmaker has professionally conserved the bottom board.     There is a functioning door lock with key in the waist.  Minor shrinkage cracks and splits that you find in a 200 year old wooden case.   The Scudder makers label is on the back board with minor losses.    There are small shims on the case stiles that support the works.
