Morgan Hollinshead No. 95, Moorestown NJ

Morgan Hollinshead was at work as a Silversmith and Clockmaker  in Moorestown during the last quarter of the 18th Century through the first quarter of the 19th Century.  His clocks are signed and numbered.    He was born in 1753 and died in 1832.   Our clock is “No. 95” and a housed in a very identifiable Delaware Valley Walnut Chippendale Case.  The overall measurements of the clock are 95 1/2 X 19 3/4 X 10 inches with a 13 X 18 inch painted iron dial with 10 3/4 inch time track and 1 1/4 inch Roman numerals.   The bottom of the front plate carries a beautiful inscription “David Shoemaker, February 1, 1801.”  Shoemaker was a clockmaker at work in nearby Mt. Holly during the last quarter of the 18th C.   There are also numerous inscriptions on the inside of the front plate that document repair work from the 19th Century, many by Benj. Budd of Mount Holly.  There is also a Budd label with pencil inscription on the inside of the waist door.  This clock descended in the Haines family and was purchased from Timothy Haines.  The movement has been professionally serviced and the clock runs and strikes very nicely.   The case has been conserved and is in overall very good condition.  The feet are appropriate bench made restorations.   The flame finial is period.    Even the bonnet glass is original “wavy glass.”    The case comes with a working door lock and key.  Even the winding crank is original !   All in all a wonderful piece of South Jersey history.
