Philadelphia C. 1770 works by Thomas Wagstaffe London

Monumental Philadelphia carved Mahogany tall case clock with works by Thomas Wagstaffe of London. The bonnet has applied broken arch scroll moldings over a dentil molded crown molding with carved rosettes terminals and open fretwork between the scrolls.   There is an elaborately carved rooster center finial.  The face board of the bonnet with carved foliate decoration above an arched shaped glazed bonnet door.   Flanking the bonnet are four fluted columns retained by fire gilded brass Corinthian capitals.  The waist section with tombstone shaped door flanked by fluted quarter columns terminating in fire gilded brass Corinthian capitals.   The base with applied panel all resting on ogee bracket feet.  The early composite brass dial with a finely engraved name boss that reads: “Thomas Wagstaffe London.”   Below the boss is a slot with a lever that enables or silences the bell strike.  Framing the dial are 6 applied cast brass spandrels.    Inside the chapter ring above Roman numeral 6 is an aperture that shows the calendar day of the month.   The finely made “five pillar” eight day brass striking movement with strike/silent powered by a pair of lead filled brass shell weights.   Overall dimensions 103 X 19 X 11 1/2 inches with a 12 X 17 inch dial, 10 inch time track, and 1 1/8 inch numerals.
