Samuel Quest, Maytown PA Cherry Sheraton 8-day Tall Case Clock

Samuel Quest, Maytown

Samuel Quest (1795 – 1844) was a Silversmith, Clockmaker, & Gunsmith at work in Maytown, Lancaster County PA during the first quarter of the 19th Century.  In the mid 1820’s he moved to Indiana Borough, and in 1831 he was Burgess of Indiana.  His shop was next door to the Court House on Market St. where he advertised as a “clock and watch maker and silversmith ….. “

The example that we are offering for sale is a wonderful example that has never been refinished, retains its original feet and finials.  The Cherry Sheraton case stands 99 inches tall with a 13 1/4 inch waist and 19 1/2 inch base all on turned feet.   The American painted iron dial is in excellent condition and has been very gently cleaned.  One of the lunar scenes depicts a sailing ship flying an American flag.   The eight day brass striking movement has been completely disassembled in our shop and professionally overhauled.   Note the cutout in the plates a characteristic of the maker. The weights, pendulum, and winding crank are all original as well.
