Thomas Norton, Rising Sun
Here is one of the earliest painted dial tall clocks made by the renowned Delaware Valley Clockmaker Thomas Norton, Rising Sun, Germantown PA. This is a majestic Walnut Chippendale case with overall dimensions of 95 1/2 X 19 X 9 1/2 inches. It has wonderful proportions with bold carved scroll moldings, double tombstone waist door, mitred trunk, shaped base panel all resting on ogee bracket feet. A pair of original, cast brass 18th C strap hinges secure the waist door to the case. The door lock is operational and comes with at skeleton key. Also included is the original winding crank. The eight day brass striking movement has an original painted iron dial signed “Thomas Norton, Rising Sun” which is characteristic of this maker. The paint decoration in the arch is untouched and original. Since coming into the shop, we have gone through the movement and the clock runs and strikes perfectly. The case has been thoroughly cleaned and a hand rubbed shellac finish has been applied followed by an amber paste wax and buffing. The feet are original with minor stabilization and re-gluing to the blocks. The weights, pendulum, and winding crank are original. The glass in the bonnet has been renewed. The clock is from an Eastern PA family and there is an old chalk inscription on the backboard inside from the late 1800s with the family name.
