Waltham Gold Front Weight Driven Presentation Banjo Clock

First Quarter 20th Century weight driven banjo timepiece made by the Waltham Watch & Clock Company, Waltham MA. This model is known as the “Bride’s Clock” and was an important example in the series of “Willard Clocks” reproduced by Waltham. The origin of the name comes from the original Aaron Willard Jr. “Bride’s Clock” and coincides with the publication of the first Simon Willard book in 1911 by John Ware Willard that includes a B&W photograph of an original example C. 1815. This particular model is not often seen and it was over $ 100 at a time when $ 100 was several month’s pay. It is a full size banjo that measures 42 inches and what makes this one special is the condition of the gilding and the glasses. The reverse glass paintings are untouched and original and depict the original geometric style and colors: Robin’s Egg Blue, White, & Gold Leaf. As with any antique that is 100 years old there is some normal minor wear, minor chipping, paint loss. The Pine frames are gilded with 23KT gold leaf and in a remarkable state of preservation. Note the gilded wooden acorn at the top of the case. The works are weight driven and eight day duration equipped with “maintaining power.” The plates are finely finished with damascened surface treatment and signed (die stamped) by the maker. A choice example by any bench mark. Enjoy the photos as you will not see another one in this condition for a long time.
